Memento Mori 7 (the Game Is Afoot)

Greetings, Jonathan Black here. It's been awhile.

I suppose I don't need to tell you that the last 7 missions that I sent you guys out on did not end well. A bunch of people died, some people killed each other, it was a messy affair. These are prices that must be paid for the greater good. I am confident that with so many new recruits, you won't all be psychotic murderers.


This time, I want you to go to Arizona, right on the border of Mexico. 8 people have turned up dead in 8 nights, including some of our agents. The locals are crying out that it is the Chupacabra. The goat sucker of myth and legend. Most people would call that ridiculous, you and I know better, don't we?

I want you to go to Arizona, figure out what is going on, and make it stop. I am sure that is not too much to ask from a sturdy group like you. I don't need to tell you to watch yourselves. Between us, I don't think it is the chupacabra at all. I think that something else is at work here. Something that seems to be stemming from a specific house. Luckily, that is where you'll be staying on your trip!

But what if Garnet is a killer?

The plane ride is uneventful. Thoughts come into your head about the upcoming mission, but that's normal. You don't feel as if anything supernatural is causing that. It's just a normal side effect of the job.

Arriving at the airport, you step outside to the smoking area. Smoking is not really your thing, but that is where everyone is supposed to meet up. Looking at the other people at the smoking area, you wonder who is who? Are any of these people even on the mission? You notice a girl of about 18, sitting at an outside table a few feet away. She's reading a book, but you cannot quite tell what the book is. You are pondering this, when she takes a pair of scissors out of her bookbag, and places it against the table, the blades pointing upwards. It is almost like some weird performance art, and you cannot look away.

The girl suddenly slams her head downwards onto the blade, impaling her eye with the scissors. Blood and puss begins to spill out over the sides of the table. You blink a few times, and look again, and she seems fine.

It is obvious now who the other people on the mission are, though. Because they look just as disturbed as you do.

Before you can say anything, a van arrives. "Black Industries" is on the side, just as Jonathan said it would be. You get into the van along with the rest of your co-workers. The driver is dressed very professionally, and off you go.

Vivialyn rubs her eyes behind her huge nerd glasses. Had it been a mistake to sign up to this? Thinking about it now, she is a huge scaredy cat. Meow.

After about 45 minutes, the scenery becomes less and less commercialized. Buildings give way to trees, and the lights of the city fade under the rapidly setting sun.

The drive begins to get a little bumpy as the road turns into a gravelly path. The small figures that line either side of the road catch you off guard at first, then you realize they are dogs...a LOT of dogs. Some look mangy and stray, some have collars, some do not. They all sit there on their haunches...not barking, not moving after the van, just staring at you.

Then the van jolts to the left as the back tire runs over a pot-hole.

"Hang on, folks. We will be there shortly." The driver says, cheerfully.

Elise looked around at the van's passengers.Then she felt the eyes staring at her....

The Dogs.

That shit was really fucking weird.
She loveed dogs, but when a mangy pug is giving you the stink eye, that can disappear faster than you can say "euthanisation".

Nayami yawns. Whenever she was a passenger in a vehicle she would become tired. But it was hard to relax because of all the bumps. They really need to pave these roads...

With little else to do, Nayami turned her attention to the outside. The hell are those? she thinks to herself, seeing her gaze returned by dark figures. Dogs? That's weird..... A little shaken, she decides to get to know her fellow passengers.

"Hi, nice to meet you, I'm Nayami," she says, extending her hand for a greeting to the person sitting next to her.

Niipaan sits in the van with her head down... she did not realize that the car ride would be so bumpy and after the whole thing with the girl and the knife..she just felt sick and wanted to get off this dang moving vehicle of evil. She heard a person somewhere in the van say hi to one of the other passengers, but due to the car sickness she had a hard time telling who it was in reference to, so she just sat there in with her head in her lap.

Axel was fiddling with a loose string on his coat when the bus hit a pothole. The reaction to the turn and everything caused him to pull the strand a bit too much causing the sleeve to bunch up in a spot. He would have to fix this later when he had the time, but his attention was grabbed by his neighbor greeting themselves. She seemed like a nice girl this Nayami woman so he returned her greeting by saying, “My name is Axel nice to meet you.”

Elise elbows in obnoxiously. This Nayami was kinda cute, and Elise was definitely feeling that.

"Hey," she interjects, "I'm Elise. I'll be your tour buddy for this event." She drops a wink.

Portia had barely eaten breakfast that morning before she was off on a plane to God-Knows-Where, and everything after that just seemed... well, for this job, pretty regular. She had survived this long, creepy things just seemed normal to her now. Hell, with her dark hair and the bags under her eyes, she wouldn't be surprised if someone thought she were a ghost.

She briefly wondered if the girl had actually felt the scissors pierce through her eye, despite knowing it was just an illusion of some sort to freak them out. But with that thought flitting past, she looked outside the van window by her side, counting the dogs they drove by. Dog catchers must make a killing out here.

Kelvin had been sleepy. He has been tired for quite a few months now. In fact, when he was signing up for the job, he was half-asleep and had no idea what was in store for him.

That scissors girl thing totally freaked him out though, and he was definitely NOT in the mood for a nap.

He glanced nervously at the dogs, wondering whether or not weird stuff was going to happen if he looked too long.

He heard one of the passengers introduce herself as Nayami, and her voice sounded human enough. He sat nervously watching the other passengers. o-o

Nayami felt comfortable knowing someone else's name. Everything going on has been just so bizarre and unnerving. She hoped she could become friends with this Axel character.

As Axel introduced himself, another girl appeared, introducing herself as Elise. She seems pretty friendly, Nayami thought to herself.
